Yes, India is soon going to set up its own first geological park. The GSI which stands for Geological Survey of India has granted the making of the country’s cost 1st geopark at Lamheta village on river Narmada banks in Jabalpur district of the assessed state Madhya Pradesh. It has been approved under the ministry of mining, along with an of Rs 35 crore. Let us first understand what exactly a Geopark is!

What is Geopark?

According to sources, a Geopark is a unified land or we can say an area that promotes the protection and utilization of geological heritage in a sustainable manner and advances the economic well-being of the human being who lives there. There are national geoparks and global geoparks.

At this time, there is a total of 169 UNESCO Global Geoparks in 44 different countries.

The Geoparks are very important as Geoparks utilize that heritage to spread awareness of issues facing society in the context of a dynamic planet. Many parks also promote awareness of geological hazards, involving earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis and many others help in preparing disaster mitigation strategies with local societies.

Now, let us get to the topic again. The geological park will be made in Lamheta, due to the reason being that this place is among important places in the globe, from the geological point of view. In the year 1928, William Henry Sleeman had found a Dinosaur fossil from this place. UNESCO has also stated Lamheta as a geo heritage site.

Just so you know, Lameta Formation is also known as Infratrappean Beds. It is a sedimentary geological form discovered in the state of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. It is connected with the Deccan Traps. It is of the Maastrichtian age and is well-known for its dinosaur fossils.

Let us now talk about the Geological Survey of India (GSI)

GSI (Geological Survey of India) was established in the year 1851. It is a scientific agency of India, which works under the ministry of Mines organisation. It is 1 of the oldest corporations globally and the 2nd oldest survey corporation in our country India, following the Survey of India. The Survey of India was formed in 1767. It was established to do geological surveys and studies of India. Further, it also performs as a prime provider of basic earth science data to the general public, industry and government besides official participants in coal, cement, steel, power industries, metals, and international geoscientific forums.
