Abel Prize is a yearly prize which is provided every year to a person by the King of Norway, who has performed a great job in the area of mathematics. The yearly award for mathematics is known after the remarkable Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel.

The prize is based straight on the Nobel Prize. It is pertinent to say that there is no Nobel Prize for the subject of mathematics, though some mathematicians have won the Nobel Prize in various fields other than Maths.

The winner of the Abel Prize is given a token of 7 million Norwegian Krone (NOK), after the money was increased in the year 2019, from 6 million NOK.

Further, let me mention that the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters committee picks the winner each and every year. Notably, the criteria to be a part of the committee is that 1 should be a recognized mathematician and there is no nationality limitation to become a member of the aforementioned committee.

Let us talk about this year’s prize.

ABEL PRIZE 2022- United States mathematician Dennis Sullivan has won 1 of the prestigious awards in mathematics, for his work and contributions to the area of topology, it is the study of qualitative properties of shapes and their related fields.

“Sullivan has repeatedly changed the landscape of topology by introducing new concepts, proving landmark theorems, answering old conjectures and formulating new problems that have driven the field forwards,” stated the citation for the Abel Prize, 2022.

Since it was 1st awarded in the year 2003, the Abel Prize has began to represent a lifetime achievement award, says the Hans Munthe-Kaas, the committee chair and of course a mathematician at the Uni of Bergen, Norway. The 24 past years Abel laureates are all recognized mathematicians; various did their renowned work in the mid-to-late 20th century. “It’s nice to be included in such an illustrious list,” says Sullivan, who has appointments at Stony Brook Uni in Long Island, New York, and also at the City University of New York.

I am very fascinated by this and also I like the fact that they are recognizing and giving the talent respect and dignity that they deserves. What is your opinion on this?
