The heart of the Indian music industry, Lata Mangeshkar, who enthralled generations of audiences as the singing voice behind several actresses’, has gone for her heavenly abode. Her last rites were take place on Sunday at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, India. She was 92.
The cause for her death was Covid-19, according to sources. PM Narendra Modi stated on Twitter that he was “anguished beyond words.”
Ms. Mangeshkar left a legacy of 10,000 songs, most songs in Hindi but also in many other Indian languages. Her solos and duets with Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, and Mukesh are immortals.
Childhood- Lata Mangeshkar was born on 28 September 1929, in Indore. She was the eldest of 5 children born. Her father, Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, is a known classical musician active in Marathi-language theatre. Her sisters Asha, Meena, and Usha and her one brother, Hridaynath, are also musicians.
Lata Mangeshkar came from a family of performers. Her father operated a theatre company, and she grew up along with a love for music. The goal of the sisters (Lata and Asha Bhosle) was to state forward their father’s legacy. In an interview, she recalled the reason for her vocation. She expressed, “It so happened that once my father asked his shagird (disciple) to practice a raag while he finished some work. I was playing nearby and suddenly a note of the raag that shagird was rendering, jarred. And the next minute, I was correcting him. When my father returned, he discovered a shagird in his own daughter.”
Lata Mangeshkar also had a profession as a live performer, generally appearing onstage in an understated white or cream-coloured sari. India’s 1st pm, Jawaharlal Nehru, was said to have been coming to tears by her patriotic Hindi song, “Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon,” after India’s war with China in the year 1962.
In the book 2009, “Lata Mangeshkar … in Her Own Voice,” which was written by Nasreen Munni Kabir, Lata Mangeshkar stated that she gave up education on her 1st day of school. She had brought her 10-months-old sister, Asha, with her, and the teacher denied allowing the baby into the classroom.
Lata Mangeshkar never married in her life. For years, she sustained her mother as well as siblings, until they started their careers. Her sister Asha Bhosle is also a well-known singer.
“Music is my life and God,” Mangeshkar said in the book. “My prayer is music — it is like a father and mother to me.”
India will always remember the pure soul. She has contributed very much to us. May she rest in peace!
