Is Russia losing the war against Ukraine?
There has been a lot of media coverage regarding the losses faced by Russia while continuing the war against Ukraine. But, has the war with Ukraine really affected Russia, and does the President of Ukraine really want to stop it for the betterment of his nation? There are several questions going round and round that nobody can address purely.
We all know Ukraine’s willingness to join NATO was one of the basic reasons that pushed Russia to initiate military operations in Ukraine. Although, Russia never imagined incurring heavy losses and so much extension, what they knew was heavy economic sanctions to be imposed by Western Nations. Well, such an extension of war has changed the tide and is proving beneficial for Russia as they are rich in terms of energy and natural resources exploiting which they continue to fuel their lingering economy. The sanctions imposed by the Western Nations have started to backfire as Europe, for a long time has been dependent on Russia for natural gas, especially during winter. The chilling cold has hit hard the western nations in terms of economy as they continue to purchase natural gas at higher prices which evidently puts pressure on the common man via a 2X increase in spending on electricity bills. A recent example of the UK is in front of us. Due to uncontrollable inflation, the government formed by former PM Liz Truss collapsed within just 45 days, and now the pressure can be seen clearly in the USA as elections continue to approach.
The USA pressurized India too to reduce its dependency on Russia for crude oil and other natural products but fortunately, the Indian government didn’t bow down before their orders and in return, they increased their trade with Russia for running its economy robustly. Still, India faces the brunt of inflation along with other nations as the price of food prices has also increased.
This presents us with a clear example that nations rich in natural resources and adequate technology can maintain themselves despite external pressures. The longer the war continues, the more pressure on the world economy will increase and the most affected will be the poorer nations and their people.
Personally, I believe if the war continues even longer it will continue to damage the world economy. For Ukraine, it will be a disaster as they have not been able to come up with concrete support from a majority of nations, and neither they have the technology nor they are economically robust to fuel their war on their own. The support by western nations cannot be continued long as they too have an economy to support. History repeated itself when Germany under the leadership of the Nazi tried to invade Russia but it led to the downfall of the Nazi Empire as the war drew longer and they couldn’t stand the harsh winter. The same is happening with Ukraine and other western nations today but none of those have shown any effort to stop the enraged war.
All the countries and responsible civil organizations should come together to contribute to establishing peace so that the nation & confidence building starts once again between the two large countries which will eventually contribute to the development of the world.
