Is the Apple MagSafe really worth buying?
Apple has been playing the filed with its iPhone 12 series and along with the phones, it has launched many more accessories that goes along with it. And Magsafe is one of those accessories. The company has made Magsafe a fundamental aspect of the iPhone 12’s design. It is basically a ring of magnets centrally placed on the back of the iPhone 12 from wireless chargers to cases and wallet attachments that simply snap on and off.
With respect to the iPhone 12, MagSafe is a new way to charge an iPhone 12 handset, without the need for a lightning cable to be plugged in. This of course need to be bought separately also because the iPhone 12 box does not include a charger with it. The new handsets feature magnets in a new rear casing, which will snap to a charging dock for a secure charge. It’s very similar to the existing charging solution for the Apple Watch.
MagSafe has a lot in common with 5G in that respect; both are technologies in the iPhone 12 that’ll only get more impressive over time. MagSafe gadgets are accessories you can buy separately to your iPhone, which make use of this magnetic ring so they can clip to it. You can even attach multiple MagSafe peripherals, like a case and wallet attachment at the same time, though we’d imagine not all are compatible with each other.
It’s an intriguing concept, goes along the concept of Motorola’s Moto Mods or the current accessory pins found with Apple’s iPads. Apple revealed a slim leather credit card wallet that can be affixed to the iPhone, a new leather sleeve case that uses the magnet to simply display the clock through a peep hole. There’s also a new MagSafe Duo combo charger designed for charging both an Apple Watch and an iPhone.
Apple’s initial applications for Magsafe are twofold: magnetic chargers that stick to the back of your phone, and clip-on cases that stay stuck to it, but as third-party manufacturers play around with the tech there’s a lot more they could achieve. MagSafe has a maximum speed of 15W. Not exactly a world-beating figure when you look at what the likes of OnePlus are doing, but still better than the previous 7.5w for Qi wireless charging.
One use of MagSafe is for wireless charging — though since MagSafe chargers are wires that attach to the back of the phone, perhaps ‘portless charging’ is a better way of describing it. The iPhone 12 charges at 15W using MagSafe — that’s twice the speed of the charging offered using a normal wireless charger with the device.
The iPhone 12 MagSafe charger uses the smartphone’s magnets to properly align, making sure you get the full powering speeds possible. Sure, having a magnetic charger clipped to the back of your phone effectively makes the whole ‘wireless’ thing redundant, but it’s still less fiddly than an actual charging cable which is a upside of the Magsafe charger to some extent.
Have you bought the iPhone 12? If yes, have you also got the Magsafe charger?
