Lithium Reserve in Jammu & Kashmir: Development Prospect for India.

India recently found 5.9 million tonnes of Lithium reserves in the Reasi district of Jammu & Kashmir. This has been a major development for a big country like India and an upcoming challenge too. India is 100% dependent on imports for Lithium which somehow is a major concern because sooner or later there will be a shortage of this “White Gold” in the whole world.

Currently, the challenge that India poses is that we do not have any refineries nor do we have the technology to refine the found Lithium so that we can become self-dependent and manufacture batteries that’ll power electric vehicles. The Indian government is expected to auction the large reserve in the form of small units to companies but with a clause that the reserves should be refined in India which will help in technological advancement and boost jobs in India. Again, this will consume a lot of time since industries take time to establish and create the required eco-system but still steps should be taken so that in the near future we can transform ourselves as self-dependent. This will directly boost EV manufacturing since the cost of such cars will also decrease helping to boost the automobile sector. USA, one of our trusted partners is also dependent on the import of Lithium, and collaboration with them will help India and other countries. Lithium refining is considered a note printing business and Elon Musk in one of his tweets had mentioned about Tesla might be entering into such a business in the future because due to the refining and import the cost of manufacturing their cars are increasing only and getting tough competition from other potential competitors.

Finally, everything is linked to each other, I believe any positive toward a sustainable future will help in creating India as a responsible and trusted nation.
