Swachh Survekshan 2023
Union Government of India has launched the 8th Edition of Swachh Survekshan — SS-2023 under the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0.
Manoj Joshi, Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has launched Swachh Survekshan at a virtual event in the capital of New Delhi recently.
The newly-launched mission is made with the theme of ‘Waste to Wealth’ as its driving philosophy. The Swachh Survekshan- 2023 is curated towards getting circularity in waste management. The survey would provide priority to the principle of three Rs- Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.
Speaking at this launch event, Mr Manoj Joshi stated that the Swachh Survekshan has made it into an inspiration component, rather than being an assessment tool. This huge survey undertaken anywhere has brought about substantive transformations at the ground level, with cities performing good and having a sense of pride.
The Ministry said that this mission Swachh Survekshan has come up as the largest Urban sanitation event in the globe over the years. It was also observed that whenever the Swachh Survey begins, there is an improved level of activities done by the cities and cities are cleaner during the months the survey is done. Therefore, in SS-2023, the evaluation will be going to be done in 4 phases, instead of 3 phases in earlier editions.
In SS 2023, some additional coverage has been provided to source segregation of waste, improvement of the waste processing capacity of cities to level the waste generation and decrease the waste going to the dumpsites. Indicators have been acknowledged with additional weightage on emphasizing the requirement for a phased reduction of plastic, plastic waste processing, encouraging waste to parks and zero waste events.
I think this step by the government can prove good for nature.
