Unknown Food Items!
India is a diversified country and every state has a culture of their own. Be it in terms of food, clothing, language so on and so forth. Food is a bonding element in my opinion. It has the power to bring people closer however there are a few food items that are associated with either a particular state, or a tribe etc which we might not be aware of and also might find it a little weird. However, it is still food and deserves respect. Let’s take a look into a few food items that are eaten around the country that we might not have heard before.
Nahkham
This dish is a popular food among the Garos of Meghalaya, North east India. The key ingredients of this dish are dried fish, ashes (that black powdery leftover of any object set on fire which we usually throw away) and vegetables, but only to enhance the taste if you wish. The otherwise delicious food dish has only one problem: its pungent odour which if not used to might come on to be really strong.
Baby Shark Curry: If you have been to Goa, you definitely must have seen this, or at least read it somewhere. On the waters of Goa, one of the most impressive sights is the baby shark. The same baby shark is a star dish of Goan cuisine — they make a curry out of it. This dish is prepared using different sauces and doesn’t come cheap since the fishermen put lots of effort to catch them.
Eri Polu:
This is a popular food ingredient in Assam. It’s basically eri silkworm pupa. This means once a silkworm starts enclosing the cocoon of eri silk, the pupa state of their life cycle begins and as soon as the silk is taken out by boiling the cocoon in hot water, the leftover silkworm — the pupa — is prepared with Khorisa, another exotic food ingredient of this state. This dish melts in your mouth.
Frog Legs:
Frog legs are a delicacy among the Lepcha community of Sikkim. The dish is also known to have medicinal qualities. Prepared in multiple ways, it is believed that frog legs can cure various stomach-related diseases.
