World No Tobacco Day is annually observed on the day of May 31 to spread awareness regarding the damage caused by taking tobacco. Consuming tobacco kills more than 80 lakh people across the globe per year. Besides the human cost, intaking tobacco causes the environment and nature to degrade.

Further. tobacco consumption is 1 of the factors that are said to adversely affect the efforts to get the UN–to adopt sustainable development agenda by the year 2030, which strives to decrease tobacco-related deaths by one-third by that day.

History: In the year 1987, the World Health Organisation released a resolution that said April 7, 1988, was World No Smoking Day. The act was then passed to motivate people to stop using tobacco for a minimum of 24 hours. Later in the year, 1988, the organization passed one more resolution that the ‘World No Tobacco Day will be observed globally on May 31.

On this day, many events, campaigns, and activities are held to educate and aware people of the bad consequences of tobacco on their health. There are immediate and long-term health advantages if one quit smoking.

The theme of the Year 2022- Each year the day ‘World No Tobacco” is observed with a diverse theme; this year, i.e. 2022, the theme of the day is “Protect The Environment”. Further, the 2022 global campaign strives to heighten the public awareness regarding the environmental influence of the whole tobacco cycle, from its beginning cultivation, production, and distribution to the waste it generates which is very toxic.

The 2022 theme concentrates on the effects of tobacco on nature. The dangerous impact of tobacco on the environment is huge and it is constantly growing unnecessary pressure on our planet’s already scarce resources.

In my opinion, it is a very good step to prevent the cause!
